A Hurricane Ian Update:

B-2 is back, and better than ever! Renovated and upgraded, along with all of Breakers West, and happily awaiting your arrival.

On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian, a monstrous Category 4 storm, slammed into Sanibel with 155mph (239kmh, 135kt) winds and a 13ft (4m) storm surge that swept across Breakers West. Amazingly, our building remained standing. But the storm surge destroyed the ground floor units, scoured away our landscaping and part of our roof and swept away the neighboring inn, leaving Breakers West effectively Gulf-front, at least for the next few years.

B-2 and most of the 2nd floor units escaped damage, save for losing our lanai screens, railings and screen doors.

We took advantage of having on-site contractors to repaint B-2, remodel both bathrooms, add new, sea-blue carpeting and vinyl plank flooring, a new sleeper-sofa and a new king-size bed.

In addition to a new tile roof, Breakers West replanted its landscaping with storm-resistant native vegetation, rebuilt the parking lots, added new pool and roof-deck furniture, re-tiled the walkways, added new screen doors to the units and rebuilt and beautified our private beach-access path. Our beach was actually widened by Ian, and regroomed by the City of Sanibel, and was “gifted” by Ian with heaps of colorful, often rare and unusual shells.

Sanibel, too, is back. Restaurants and shops have reopened, the bike-hike, shared-use paths have been restored and expanded. Beloved places like the “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge have reopened and are looking lush once again. Record numbers of shorebirds have arrived, sea turtles are back nesting on our beaches.

We are deeply sorry for anyone whose B-2 stays were abruptly canceled by TripAdvisor, as they apparently moved to close their booking-business. It was a shock to us, as well; it was entirely outside of our control.
